One person has died following the collapse of part of an old building being demolished at Otolo-Nnewi, in the Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The deceased, identified as 25-year-old Bakeru Iwal, was reportedly trapped when a section of the structure suddenly collapsed during the demolition.
The Anambra State Police Command said operatives attached to the Otolo Divisional Headquarters responded to the scene after receiving the report, cordoned off the area and commenced preliminary investigation.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the scene was documented, while the deceased’s body was evacuated to a mortuary pending autopsy and other necessary examinations.
Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, had ordered a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether anyone bears responsibility.
He said appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
The police spokesman urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed, adding that further updates would be provided as necessary.
